Lift Me Up

We hope you all are enjoying our song and video for “Lift Me Up!” The word of God is one of the best places to receive that encouragement from the Lord each day, so I wanted to share one of my favorite verses that has always lifted me up! The passage of scripture that comes to mind when I think of “Lift Me Up” is Psalm 23. I memorized it when I was a kid, and a few years ago when I was going though some hard times, I remembered that passage and would quote it to myself. It never failed to remind me that God is with me, and loves me, and would always lift me up. – Matt

“The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” – Psalm 23

We’d love to hear from you guys! What is your “Lift Me Up” verse?

    2 Corinthians 3:4,5,6
Such is the confidence that we have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us competent to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills but the Spirit gives life.

  8. melissa says:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Phil. 4:13 and “…I am fearfully and wonderfully made…”-Psalm 139 “His grace is sufficiant for me, for His power is made perfect in weakness” -2Cor.12:18 are a few of the ones I go back to frequently in different situations! I sure don’t know where I’d be without being “lifted up” by my God who loves me SO MUCH!! Thank you for the reminder in the song! Blessings!! :)

proverbs 24:16 (especially the first part)- the righteous may fall 7 times & will rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity
micah 7:8- do not gloat over me, my enemy! though I have fallen, I will rise. though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.
psalm 34:17-19- the righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, & delivers them out of all their troubles. the LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, & saves such as have a contrite spirit. many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all. (actually the whole thing is great but those are the most uplifting)
& all of psalm 37 is good :)
the bible is just filled with encouragement for those struggling. reading through psalms has always been encouraging for me. David amazes me with the way He is so honest & raw. it seems like anyone who has been in churches for too long feels like it’s “unchristiany” to say that God has forsaken me, that He doesn’t care, & in one sense it might be since He said He will never leave or forsake us. but read through the psalms! David, the man after God’s own heart, is always saying things like “how long o Lord? will You forsake me forever?” & it was ok. God didn’t strike Him for blasphemy or tell Him to quit whining. David was being honest & sharing his heart. I heard a quote one time, don’t remember who it was from, but it was being spoken from the perspective of God. He said, “why don’t you tell me what’s on your heart, cuz I’m looking at it right now.” I don’t think God ever had to say that to David, he was always so honest, so real in his prayers. but i think God would want to say that to us.

  16. Olivia says:

    Proverbs 18:10
“The Name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runs into it, and is safe.”

  17. Denisse says:

Isaiah 41:10 “Have no fear, for I am with you; do not be looking about in trouble, for I am your God; I will give you strength, yes, I will be your helper; yes, my true right hand will be your support.” and Jeremiah 29:11 “For I am conscious of my thoughts about you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you hope at the end.”
I can’t stop listening “lift me up”, blessings!!! :)

  18. Isaac says:

    Helaman 5:12
“And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

  19. Andrew says:

Hebrews 13:5, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,

    “Never will I leave you;
    never will I forsake you.”

1 Timothy 4:8, “8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”

I just remember the promise of 1 Corinthians 15:51b-55, “We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?”

Matthew 11:29b-30, “for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Isaiah 40:31, “but those who hope in the LORD
    will renew their strength.
    They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”

In this world, these are some of the verses that help me out the most. 1 Timothy 4:8 is for when I start looking down on myself because I see a picture of a well built guy or something and the rest are for when I’m going through a rough/hard time. There are several more, but these are the ones I refer to the most.

  20. Sarra says:

My verse also comes from Psalms. The book of Psalms is full of “Lift Me Up” verses.
I have read that book more then the others.
I have to say the one that I quote in times of hurt or trouble…
“For His anger is for but a moment, His favor is for life, weeping may endure for one night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalms 30:5
It really helped me when my brother got into a very bad car accident. The doctors said it was a miracle he lived…
It has helped me through more then that though…

  21. Dwight Fuqua says:

Psalms 56:1 Be merciful to me, O God: for man would swallow me up; all day long he oppressing me.
2 My enemies would daily swallow me up: for they are many that fight against me, O thou Most High.
3 In the time when I am afraid, I will trust in thee.
4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what man can do to me.

  22. candifer says:

i have this one taped to the wall by my computer at work. it’s a reminder i need every day:

isaiah 26:3-4: you will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God is the eternal rock.

    Dear TheAfters,
I don’t exactly have a verse to share, but,I do want to tell you how your song has helped me in life.

    Here is my story…

A few weeks ago, my older brother called our house. My mother answered the phone. He told her that he wanted to move in with his dad, and go to public school (we have been home schooled all of our lives). It completely broke our famiy, because we are all so close. My brother and I are 22 months apart, so we are like best friends. When I heard the news about my big brother, I was very mad. I became very bitter towards my brother. I felt like I had been betrayed. I didn’t want to talk to him at all. I was so disapionted. But, my mother was hit harder than any of us. I was so mad, but she was still loving and kind towards him. I remember her asking me somthing on the way to pick him up, “Are you ready to see him?” “Not really” I replied. “Why?” she asked. ” Because of what he did. Why aren’t you and dad mad at him too?” ” Sweetheart, you have to love someone even if they hurt you. You have to love someone even if they have broken your heart. This is what unconditional love is. This is the unconditional love that Jesus showed us.”
Then, “Ocean Wide” played. Got me really thinking. And anout 30 minutes later “Lift Me Up” played on the radio. I already knew what the song was about, but, I really didn’t want to give in my pride. I knew that the Holy Spirit was touching my heart.

When my brother got in the car, my mother was so nice to him. I was still really mad at him for making such a decition. He was pretty set on what he wanted. There was nothing that we could say that would make him change his mind. That night, my mom and dad took him out to eat, hoping that they could convince him to stay. It didn’t work. He still was set on what he was going to do. He rode home with my dad that night. They got home before us and decided to go for a little walk down our road. When they did, my brother just puored out his heart to my dad and told him everything. He told him that he never wanted to live with his dad, but he only did it because he was so tired of the presure that they put him under over there. My mom and I were still at home with the little kids waiting on them to get back. I was still so broken, so I went into one of the back bedrooms and prayed to God that someone might be able to convince him that he needs to stay. I sat back there and cried for a good 10 minutes. That it when my brother entered the house and told us everything. I was in shock1 Because I knew that God is REAL. And God is THERE. I have always struggled in believing that there really IS a God. I would always rely on things that I can see. I never really had the faith that I was suppose to have. I was really unsure of it…until that night. I could see everything. God had answered my prayers, and gave my brother back.

This all helped me remember the testemony that Josh shaed at one of your shows…About his brother and the drug addiction. I know my situation was not that survere, but, it did help me to open my eyes.

Thank you so much for all you do! Your music has been really encouraging to me…BTW…I am 13.

P.S. can you please come to Dallas or Paris, Tx?

  25. Brandon says:

I know this one’s already been listed, but it needs to be read again!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

    Jeremiah 29:11

It’s important that we ask God to reveal this plan to us, and that we follow it precisely thereafter. I think back to my life before God and, in amazement, contemplate why/how I made the decisions that I did. When i decided to give Jesus a chance, moreso an attempt to disprove the reality of a plausible God, the realization of His love overwhelmed my thoughts, and literally, coming from an eternal skeptic, changed me in ways I still cannot fully describe. To this day I’m still blown away of the reality of feeling God. Acknowledge the amazing love of our Savior, show Him love in return by offering him all your desires, and He will give you purpose; purpose that you have been meant to endeavor since before your inception. Accepting His plan is literally the most satisfaction I’ve ever experienced in my life, and I insist and implore whoever reads this who has not yet given everything they can to God, to do so. In the words of The Afters, I’m “Never going back to OK”.

Thank you The Afters for following God’s plan for you. I can’t imagine how many lives the unfathomable love of Jesus has changed through you guys. Great show last night! I had such a great time. Your fans love you.

    In our King,

    Brandon

    Philippians 4:8
Finally my brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things.
This verse helped keep me sane through so many times in my life. My mom nearly died right in front of me when i was 12, so during that time i just kept on thinking of this verse so as not to like freak out!
    it helped;)

  28. Nani Renee says:

Hi, My name is Nani Renee,
First off, Lift Me Up is my song that my boyfriend and I choose and each time we hear it, I cry, and we cry when we watch the video. My “Lift Me Up” verse is John 16:33, I got it years ago, when I was having some issues with my family, and a friend of mine one night at church camp had me write it on a note-card which I still have today, from ’06 to today.

“I have told you these things, so that in Me, you may find peace. In this world you will have troubles. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” -John 16:33

My best friend and I both share this verse and it helps me out SO much :)

  33. Erin says:

I love the entire song. The first time I heard Lift Me Up, I was in a very difficult place in life. I’m a handicapped college student who had just been through some major educational challenges. I was already a fan of your music so I bought the Light Up The Sky album online with the last of a gift card someone had given me for Christmas the previous year. This was in January 2011. In October 2011 my grades were struggling and I was considering dropping out of college when I got hit by a truck. After that, I felt just like you talk about in the first verse: I’m waiting for the sunrise/ Waiting for the day/Waiting for a sign that I’m/Where You want me to be. I decided I couldn’t take the frustration anymore so I asked God to give me that sign, and what He gave me led to a change in my major. I couldn’t be happier now.
